Detection of Tick-Borne Pathogens

Ticks transmit many pathogens causing severe human and animal diseases. The most clinicaly singificant diseases in central Europe are tick-born encephalitis, lyme disease and human granulocytic anaplasmosis (former ehrichiosis). Our laboratory provides complete molecular testing of ticks  for presence of all three pathogens causing these diseases.

What is tick testing?

In the laboratory the tick sample is tested for presence of pathogens infectious to human (or animals). The test detects three most wide-spread and dangerous infectious agents causing Lyme borreliosis, tick-borne encephalitis and human granulocytic anpalasmosis. You may choose any combination of the three pathogens. In every case the test for Borrelia burgdorferi the cuasative agen of Lyme borreliosis is highly recommended.


How does the molecular test works?

The test is based on detection of genetic information (DNA, RNA) specific for the target pathogens using highly sensitive methods of molecular biology. The test is based on multiplication of the specific target sequence using polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

What is it good for?

The test results bring information on the level of risk of infection to the human attacked by the tick. In case the test result is positive, the probability of infection transmission form the tick to human is high (although not 100 % - the infectio risk is influenced by multiple factors including duration of tick attachment, level of immunity, method of tick removal etc.). In case of Lyme borreliosis and human granulocytic anaplasmosis, postexpositional antibiotic treatment prevents spread of progress of the infection including possible serious complications associated especially with late phases of Lyme borreliosis. For tick-borne encephalitis there is no specific antivirotics to eliminate the infection, nevertheless it is important to identify the tick-borne encephalitis case as soon as possible, to start appropriate therapeutic measures, which have an principal effect on the course and outcome of the disease. The initial phases of the disease present only with non-specific flu-like symptoms and therefore in is not easy to identify the correct diagnosis.

Who is this test most relevant for?

It is adviced to test the ticks attached to you or our children. Nevethreless there is no sense in testing unattached, crawling ticks. Similarly there is no need to test samples for tick-borne encephalitis virus in cases the tick was feeding on a vaccinated person (which acquired appropriate boosting shots). It is also possible to get the ticks from your pets tested. For exaple dogs can suffer from Lyme borreliosis.

  • possible postexpositional administration of antibiotics to prevent Lyme borreliosis and human granulocytic anaplasmosis

How to test the tick?

  • carefully remove the tick (isntructions here and here), treat the place of tick attachment before and after the removal by common disinfectant
  • place the tick into a small plastic bag, add a small piece of a wet paper and seal properly (in case of fed ticks - resembling a small ball, use a plastic box and bubble envelope)
  • complete the order in paper (download) or online

  • information on the infection status of the tick sample will be delivered within 3 working days after the delivery to the laboratory on your email

The tick might be dead or alive or even treated with a disinfectant. It si important to transport the sample to the laboratory as soon as possible after removal. Also, it is important to send as much of the material as possible. In case only a part of tick body is sent, the realiability of a negative result can not be guaranteed. In case of sending multiple tcik samples from different persons, do not forget to clearly lael the ticks in order to identify the person whoch was attacked by the particular tick.
